Hello, and welcome to this free conversation thread from The Flock with Jennifer Crichton. Just a reminder that you can support the work that goes into this newsletter, and access all manner of extra columns, interviews, audio content and conversation throughout the week, by becoming a paid subscriber.
I’ve been wracking my brains about an insightful new angle to bring to you on this most dramatic of weeks.
Should we focus on the death of the would-be world king? The fact he’s still hanging in there, potentially until the autumn, or the fresh allegations he tried to get a job in City Hall for a woman alleging an affair?
Perhaps I should write a run down of the bootlickers turned back-stabbers who, having forced his demise, now wish to be anointed as prime minister?
Should we contemplate the horror of a Priti Patel premiership, or ponder a world in which we can suffer imposter syndrome but Suella Braverman can believe herself worthy of the country’s top job? Or should we instead take a moment to consider the promotion of new education minister Andrea Jenkyns who this week stuck her middle finger up – literally, not metaphorically – at all those who wanted Boris out of office?
In truth, I’d like to do all these things. But writing in advance has been completely impossible this week thanks to the constantly shifting picture and this weekend, with somewhat ironic timing, I’m literally moving out of my house, leaving a lengthy consideration of the binfire that is British politics is a little beyond me – at least until I can get to my temporary pitstop at my mum and dad’s and unpack my laptop.
I couldn’t let this weekend go without chatting with you all though, so what better time than to open up the discussion to everyone for one weekend only?
I’ll be logging on this evening from a cushion on the floor of my empty living room to hear your thoughts on the maddest week in memory – and I can’t wait to chat. Are you hopeful of change? What would you like to see happen at Downing Street? Do you have a favourite among the runners and riders or are you simply dying to escape it all? I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing where the conversation takes us…
Your right, it has been one of the maddest weeks I can recall. His premiership saw a sustained assault on the values, institutions and traditions underpinning British society and I am beyond pleased BJ isn’t the leader...but a “care taker” until Autumn, NO, he has to go for good. I think they know that too. Every second he’s still the PM the Conservatives continue to lose credibility - what little they have left.
I can’t imagine a single Conservative in that party who’d I’d want to see as PM, with the exception being Tom Tugendhat. All the others have been deeply complicit in the destruction this cabinet have brought to all of us. It was only when they began to see that the British public were overtly enraged and didn’t want to be led by a liar, law breaker and someone who knowingly promoted a person who sexually assaulted others into a care taking position (funnily enough)...that ‘they’ found their apparent integrity and said he must go...they should all hang their heads in shame.
I don’t think there is any coming back for this party, they’ve gone too far to recover completely.
